Francesca Scorsese Reveals Dad Martin’s Initial Reaction to Her Acting Career — and Why She Says It Felt ‘Rebellious’ (Exclusive)

Francesca Scorsese revealed her dad Martin Scorsese’s reaction to her acting career while speaking with PEOPLE exclusively at Chanel and the Tribeca Festival’s annual Through Her Lens luncheon on Sept. 22

She described her dad as her “best friend,” saying, “He knows everything about me”

Francesca also shared her excitement about joining season 2 of the Prime Video spy drama series Mr. & Mrs. Smith

Francesca Scorsese says her dad, Martin Scorsese, was “a little nervous” when she told him she was getting into acting.

“I felt a little rebellious — I’m not going to lie,” she told PEOPLE of her decision to pursue an acting career while stepping out to Chanel and the Tribeca Festival’s annual Through Her Lens luncheon in New York City on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

“But yeah, he’s been my rock and my support system. And whatever makes me happy, that’s what he wants for me,” Francesca, 26, added.

Francesca — who has starred in the HBO miniseries We Are Who We Are, as well as movies including Roommates and Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point — said she always goes to her filmmaker father, 83, for his “greenlight” before taking on a new role.

“Sometimes I’ll just come to him and I’ll be like, ‘Hey, by the way, I’m doing this. I hope it’s okay,’ ” she said. “He’s like my best friend. He knows everything about me, every little thing I’m doing. He’ll call me every day being like, ‘What are you doing? Are you doing your work?’ And I’m like, ‘Yes.’ ”

She continued, “He’s the best and he knows all the ins and outs of my life, whether I like it or not. But no, I’m just kidding. I love it.”

Francesca also shared her excitement about joining season 2 of Mr. & Mrs. Smith. In May, Variety and Deadline reported that she had been cast in the Prime Video spy drama series and would appear alongside previously announced cast members Mark Eydelshteyn and Talia Ryder. Exact plot details are being kept under wraps, according to the outlets.

“I’m freaking out. It’s great,” Francesca said of landing a role in the show. “I can’t say literally anything about it, but I’m having so much fun, and I’m so blessed and honored and meeting so many incredible people.”

Back in July, Francesca opened up about having a famous father and revealed that she initially thought the term “nepo baby” was a compliment.

While appearing on an episode of the Zach Sang Show on July 8, she noted that “a big obsession with nepotism” bubbled up within the last few years. “It just became like a word that everyone started throwing around,” she said. “And the funniest thing is I used to think it was a good thing.”

She told Sang that she thought nepo baby was simply a way to refer to a famous person’s child. “Then, the amount of hatred towards that was just so shocking to me,” she explained.

Francesca suggested that kids “just look up to their parents naturally” when it comes to choosing the same career. “If my dad was a doctor, I’d probably be a doctor, you know what I mean?” she said, agreeing with Sang that there may also be a genetic component to that shared interest between parent and child.

“I definitely got my dad’s OCD, ADHD, but I think that actually helps us creatively,” she continued. “It’s a little insane ... I’ve always been very, very, like, creative and very imaginative, even to a fault.”

After news of her Mr. & Mrs. Smith role broke, Francesca posted a TikTok video calling out some of the harsh comments she received about her casting on the show. She emphasized that she has faced nepo baby criticism for years and said she knows it “just comes with the territory” of being part of a famous family.

“I know I have doors opened for me,” she added. “But I’m still trying to do the work, you know. I’m still going hard and being passionate and creating and doing the work.”
