Joachim Trier’s newest film, Sentimental Value, arrived as one of the major contenders of this year’s awards season—and with the Oscars coming up, the film remains a standout. After Stellan Skarsgård won a Golden Globe for Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, the film went on to earn nine Oscar nominations. Those include Best Picture, Best Actress for Renate Reinsve, Best Supporting Actor for Skarsgård, Best Supporting Actress nominations for Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas and Elle Fanning, Best Director for Trier, and recognition in categories including editing and original screenplay.

The story follows two sisters, Nora and Agnes (Reinsve and Lilleaas), as they reconnect with their estranged father, Gustav (Skarsgård). A famous director, he attempts to reconnect with Nora by offering her a role in his newest film. When she declines, the part is passed to a young Hollywood up-and-comer (Fanning), who doesn’t know what she has signed up for. Gustav’s script reflects his broken connection with his children, even while he struggles to improve his actual relationships with them.

In an interview with IndieWire, Trier shared his anxiety about the film and the complexity of the family dynamics.

“I’m out on a limb with this one,” shared Trier. “I’ve done this the best I can, [to] go to very gentle, tender places of love and connection and disconnection, to try to get in the intimacy of these relationships for real, and I’ve been really anxious throughout the whole process, asking, ‘Is it too much?’”

He continued, “This [multi-character narrative] more than anything I’ve done, I’m trying to create this one emotional arc in the story. It’s a super complicated balancing act, and thematically, we realized that we had a film when we had the ending.”
