Major Cruise Line Sells a Luxury Ship for a Niche New Role

A familiar cruise ship is headed for a change in 2028, leaving its current operator for a new European venture aimed at a different market.
The ship’s next chapter will also extend beyond conventional cruising, with much of the year set aside for an entirely different role.
For U.S. travelers considering a sailing before the change, the ship will remain with its current operator until spring 2028, giving passengers time to sail aboard it before the transfer.
After that, Oceania Sirena will become “Ambella,” an adults-only, German-language ship based in Germany and operating a new program in northern Europe and the Baltics.
Ambassador Cruise Line Acquires Oceania Sirena for Spring 2028
Oceania Sirena, which carries about 670 guests, will continue sailing for Oceania Cruises under a leaseback agreement until spring 2028. Ambassador Cruise Line will then take ownership and rename the vessel Ambella.
According to The Independent, the ship will become the first vessel for Ambassador Kreuzfahrten, a new brand created for the German cruise market.
Ambella will be based in Bremerhaven and Kiel during the German summer cruise season. Its initial program is expected to operate from May through September 2028 and include 11 destination-focused itineraries plus two repositioning cruises.
The planned routes will cover northern Europe and the Baltics, along with selected sailings to southern Europe.
The ship’s smaller size is also expected to give it access to some ports that may be less suitable for larger vessels.
Ambassador Cruise Line CEO Christian Verhounig said the company sees an opportunity to offer German travelers a smaller-ship experience.
“We see a clear opportunity to offer German guests something distinctive: the intimacy and authenticity of a smaller ship, an exceptional adult-only experience and a product that combines tradition, service and destination discovery at an accessible price.”

Travelers looking ahead to 2028 do not yet have the complete itinerary program or all the details about the onboard experience.
More information about Ambassador Kreuzfahrten and its 2028 cruises is expected before bookings open in November 2026, according to Tom and Dom Travel.
The announced plans identify Bremerhaven and Kiel as Ambella’s German homeports. There has been no announcement that the ship will operate from U.K. or U.S. ports. That makes the new operation distinct from Ambassador’s existing British-focused cruise offering.
For now, the company is positioning Ambella for German-speaking travelers, with a fully German-language onboard operation.
Semester at Sea Charters Ambella for 10-Year Floating Campus
The ship will not spend the entire year operating cruises for Ambassador Kreuzfahrten. Outside the German summer season, it is expected to become a floating campus for Semester at Sea.
Ambassador has entered a long-term partnership with the Institute for Shipboard Education, the nonprofit organization that administers Semester at Sea. The program allows students to combine academic study with international travel aboard a passenger ship.
The first planned program aboard Ambella is expected to run from September 2028 through April 2029.
The partnership is initially expected to continue for 10 years, meaning the ship will have a second long-term role beyond its summer cruise schedule.
German Brand Launch Follows Ambassador Croisières French Merger
The German launch follows other changes to Ambassador’s European operation.
The company merged with French cruise operator Compagnie Française de Croisières in January 2025, bringing Renaissance into the fleet. The French operation was renamed Ambassador Croisières on September 15, 2026.
Verhounig said entering Germany represents the next stage of that expansion. “Germany is Europe’s largest cruise market, but scale alone is not the reason we are entering it.”
