Maya World defeated Hikaru Shida to win the TBS Championship in a major upset at AEW Redemption.
The inaugural AEW Redemption pay-per-view is currently underway at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Maya World challenged Hikaru Shida for the TBS Championship at the event, and Shida, who underestimated and came in looking to dominate the challenger, was in for a surprise.
Shida controlled the early stages of the match and even took a bite out of Maya World’s head, and then proceeded to target her knee. However, the challenger started to fight back with a double stomp, favoring her knee, but she felt the damage after performing an enziguri.
After a series of nearfalls, Maya World hit Shida with a couple of shining wizards, including one with a knee pad removed, but couldn’t proceed to cover her due to the injury. Shida then attempted to use her kendo stick, but the referee stopped her before World kicked it out of her hands.

Hikaru Shida had the match won at one point after Maya World nearly tapped out, but Shida stopped her before she could submit. The decision came back to haunt her later, as after a near fall after a falcon arrow, Shida thought she had actually won the match. However, the referee told her that wasn’t the case, and World used the distraction to her advantage and rolled her up to get the pin.
With the victory, the 24-year-old has won her first major championship in AEW. After falling short in the finals of the women’s Owen Hart Foundation Tournament against Mercedes Mone at Forbidden Door last month, Maya World has redeemed herself at Redemption.
