Naga Munchetty has announced she will leave BBC Breakfast after 17 years.

Munchetty, who joined the show as a reporter in 2009, will move to a new role as a presenter on BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast.

The presenter, who in recent months reportedly faced allegations of bullying by junior staffers, said it had been a “privilege to be part of the BBC Breakfast TV team”.

Munchetty, 51, will take over from Rachel Burden and Rick Edwards, who announced on the programme on Tuesday morning that they would step down in December.

She has been a co-host on the Breakfast show for 12 years, and has presented Radio 5’s weekday mid-morning programme since 2021. Munchetty is currently paid around £360,000-£364,999 for her presenting roles at the BBC.

‘Too good to pass up’

Munchetty said: “It has been a privilege to be part of the BBC Breakfast TV team for the past 17 years, working alongside an incredibly talented and hard-working group of journalists who are not only outstanding colleagues but also great friends.

“Presenting a flagship programme on 5 Live is an opportunity that was simply too good to pass up.

“It will take a huge amount of work and require 100 per cent of my focus and energy, and I’m really looking forward to throwing myself into the role.”

She added: “Between now and January, I’ll continue presenting the two programmes I love. I’m sure there will be plenty of news to cover, and it will very much be business as usual.”

BBC bosses praised Munchetty as they said farewell to her.

John McAndrew, director of BBC live and daily news, said she would be “hugely missed” by viewers, and said he was pleased she would be staying at the BBC.

Bullying allegations

The BBC reportedly launched an investigation into Munchetty amid bullying allegations in November last year.

Munchetty had faced accusations of bullying behaviour on both the breakfast programme and her Radio 5 Live show, eventually leading to a formal investigation.

She has not publicly commented on the claims, but the BBC previously said: “We take all complaints about conduct at work extremely seriously and will not tolerate behaviour that is not in line with our values.”

Munchetty has been approached for comment.
