In 2009, the Miami Dolphins became the first NFL franchise to be sold for over a billion dollars. 17 years on, a sale of more than $10 billion - and perhaps $20 billion - seems inevitable.
In June, Indian-American venture capitalist Vinod Khosla purchased the Seattle Seahawks, the reigning Super Bowl champions, from the Paul Allen estate for $9.6 billion.
There are a few contenders for which NFL franchise may go next - the Baltimore Ravens, Minnesota Vikings, and even the Dolphins are contenders -and the valuation may dwarf the Seahawks' figure. It comes as one NFL star has been forced to retire at 28 after suffering a neck injury last season.

"We are embarking on, either this year or next year, that the average NFL team valuation ... will exceed $10 billion," sports business consultant Marc Ganis told Front Office Sports.
"Whether that's this year or next year, we're getting to that. ... The top teams are going to be in the $15 billion to $20 billion range within a few years."

The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2025 NFL campaign as the highest-valued team in the league (despite a more than 30-year Super Bowl draught) at $13 billion. CNBC ranked Dallas first at $12.5 billion.

The Jones family, now led by the aging Jerry Jones, has been in charge of the Cowboys for more than 30 years. Jerry Jones, now 83, serves both as owner and general manager.
Would a $20 billion bid entice him to sell? "Every time one of these gargantuan sales takes place, people say, 'Wow, that's a lot. Did somebody overpay?' sports law expert Irwin Kishner wondered. "And ... every single time I've seen it, it always turns out that was a really smart move."

Dallas's 2024 revenue topped the NFL at $1.27 billion (the league average that season: $687 million).
The NFL is far from the only sport seeing a recent spike in sale prices: the Los Angeles Lakers (NBA) were recently sold for over $10 billion.
The Boston Celtics went for over $6 billion, and MLB teams regularly sell for more than $3 billion.
