Timothee Chalamet found himself as the subject of playful digs during the latest Academy Awards ceremony after his recent remarks about ballet and opera sparked widespread discussion across the arts world. While accepting one of the two awards for Best Live-Action Short Film, which ended in a tie, Alexandre Singh of Two People Exchanging Saliva made a subtle dig during his speech that seemed aimed at Chalamet.

Director Alexandre Singh reflected on the enduring influence of artistic expression while thanking the Academy. “We believe that art can change people’s souls,” Singh said from the stage. “Maybe it takes ten years’ time, but we can change society through art, through creativity, through theater and ballet.”
The statement triggered a wave of cheers and applause from the crowd. Singh paused briefly before finishing his sentence with a final nod: “And also cinema.”
The controversy stems from a televised conversation between Timothee Chalamet and Matthew McConaughey at a town hall event hosted by Variety and CNN. During the discussion, Chalamet spoke about the challenges facing different art forms and suggested he wouldn’t want to work in a field that constantly asks audiences to support it out of obligation.

“I don’t want to be working in ballet or opera where it’s like, ‘Hey! Keep this thing alive even though no one cares about this anymore,'” he said, adding that he meant no disrespect to the artists involved. The remarks quickly spread online and drew criticism from members of the ballet and opera communities, who defended the cultural importance of those centuries-old traditions.
The controversy resurfaced during the ceremony’s opening monologue when host Conan O’Brien poked fun at Chalamet. “Security is extremely tight tonight,” O’Brien joked. “I’m told there are concerns about attacks from both the opera and ballet communities.” The quip drew laughter from the audience and set the tone for several references to Chalamet’s remarks throughout the night.
Meanwhile, the evening also marked another near miss for Timothee Chalamet in the Best Actor category.
