Here’s the pitch about a dozen people recently made at a crowded record store and bar in Los Angeles: Date my friend.
It’s a move that would beg lots of questions, at least for some people, without any context. Namely, who are you, and do you have a picture of them?
But beneath vibrant red lighting at Permanent Records Roadhouse, friends raved (could a friendship survive anything less?) about their single friends to a packed crowd in several minute pitches as part of "Date My Friend" in Los Angeles. There, folks mingled and ordered drinks — on the menu was the vodka-based Love Potion, a cocktail perfectly themed for the occasion.
Date My Friend is a concept that positions itself as an alternative to swiping right on the apps, and an opportunity to instead make connections, romantic or platonic, in person — albeit connections informed by a highly biased source of information: the person pitching you.
“We are analog, baby,” said organizer Brit O’Brien in front of the crowd of people partaking in the Jan. 14 event, or those there to watch it all unfold.
Among those spotlighted at the L.A. event was the native New Yorker with the “bodacious body.” For her, ideally you are employed, or “you have the ambition to be employed.” It’s perhaps how reasonable that request is that the crowd burst out into laughter.

There was also the woman who owns a Craftsman style home. The crowd was audibly in awe of that — a fair reaction no matter which way you think about it (“Congratulations/I adore that architectural style/I don’t know how I’ll ever be able to buy a home”).
Oh, she's also looking for a long-term relationship with a man. Cue boos from the crowd (presumably disappointed women, but not entirely clear).
Then there was the actor whose green flag is that he’s emotionally available.
“Rare,” someone commented from the crowd.
“I don’t believe it.”

If you're getting dressed up anyway, why not make the 2026 Golden Globes a date night for you and your partner? These celebrity couples walked the red carpet for the first big award show of the year hand in hand. First up, Kylie Jenner and Timothée Chalamet got close together in the audience of the ceremony.
Date My Friend: All praise, zero desperation
By its name, Date My Friend suggests that romance is the main course of the evening. But by the final pitch, it’s clear that what’s being served is one mighty display of friendship.
Hilty Bowen had the opportunity to both be pitched and pitch someone else.
“If you have the opportunity to be pitched, say yes and run don’t walk,” Bowen said. “To be able to know how your friends see you, really truly see you, I think is one of the greatest gifts in the world and we don’t let ourselves have that opportunity near enough.”
It's a sentiment echoed by Tom Carpenter, who was pitched by roommate Jacob Berger. Their approach: A presentation with a list of compliments disguised as “10 Things I Hate About You.” For example, the 29-year-old wears too many hats, an issue considering he has “beautiful” hair.
“It’s so rarely that you get to hear such nice things said about yourself in such rapid succession, so I was up there just kind of dumbfounded with just how lucky I am to have such good friends and how much love I felt in the room,” Carpenter said.
People attend Date My Friend, an event where friends pitched their single friends to a crowd in Los Angeles on Jan. 14, 2026.
The concept of hosting a Date My Friend event stems back at least to 2003, based on a SF Gate article dated that year. It detailed how Bay Area Gen X singles got together in person after receiving an email invitation that reportedly asked “singles to party where they could ‘date my friend.’” SF Gate described Date My Friend as “the latest dating trend” started by Bay Area women.
“Over the last couple of months, I've noticed within the music community this strong desire to have community and hang out with people and people getting to meet each other outside of just concert spaces,” O’Brien told the USA TODAY Network before the event. “Just people wanting something else to do at night and ways to meet that isn't shows.”
O'Brien explored how to find people interested in more offline connections through a different endeavor. That led her to a Date My Friend event in San Francisco. She then opted to pursue a simpler version of the event herself in Los Angeles.
“It seemed perfect because it was a great way to get people out off the apps, hanging out and meeting each other, whether it's romantic or just for friends,” O’Brien said.
Date My Friend: How to stay on top of future dates
