After initially saying that her One Battle After Another costar Leonardo DiCaprio was speaking to her in a now-viral Golden Globes moment, Teyana Taylor said she's not so sure anymore.
At the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday, DiCaprio — nominated for his starring role in Paul Thomas Anderson’s action thriller — was seen speaking animatedly to someone off camera just before the show took a commercial break. The moment quickly went viral, with some pop culture sleuths trying to deduce what DiCaprio was saying with such flair — and to whom.
The verdict, per some internet lip-readers: “I was watching you with the Kpop thing, you were like, ‘Who’s that, is that, Oh, Kpop.’” The wildly successful Netflix movie KPop Demon Hunterstook home the award for Best Animated Motion Picture at the ceremony.
Taylor initially told Access Hollywood in a video posted on Wednesday that DiCaprio was speaking to her.
“I want to say we might have been talking about KPop Demon Hunters, because I was so happy when they won, because my kids love KPop Demon Hunters,” she said. “So I was over there just jamming, and I think he caught me jamming and that’s when we started, like, talking about it.”
But on Wednesday’s episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Taylor backtracked, saying she actually has no clue who DiCaprio was chatting with.
“OK, so look, yesterday I thought I broke the Da Vinci Code, right?” Taylor told Fallon. “They was like, ‘Yeah, so he was talking to Teyana.’ Now, KPop Demon Hunters won, and my kids’ favorite song is ‘Golden,’ so I was, like, really excited.”
Taylor said that when she saw how lip-readers were interpreting what DiCaprio said, she realized he likely wasn’t talking to her.
“I had to call Leo. … I knew exactly what KPop was because Chase [Infiniti] taught me,” she said of the One Battle After Another actress. “So I was like, ‘You can’t be talking to me. Were you talking to me? Because I already told people you was talking to me.’”
She said that DiCaprio apparently had two conversations about KPop Demon Hunters that night.
“KPop Demon Hunters was just in his mouth all night,” she joked, adding that it gave her a little “friendly jealousy.”
Unfortunately, Taylor couldn’t help solve the mystery, because DiCaprio doesn’t even remember who he was talking to, she said.
