Ari Emanuel has revealed details of a private phone call with Vince McMahon and Mark Shapiro that preceded McMahon’s exit from TKO Group Holdings.
Emanuel, the TKO CEO and executive chairman, discussed McMahon’s departure in his new memoir, Roll the Calls: A Memoir. The book provides Emanuel’s account of the events surrounding McMahon’s resignation from TKO in January 2024.
McMahon initially returned to WWE in January 2023 as executive chairman before WWE’s merger with Endeavor was completed and TKO was formed. He later resigned from TKO in January 2024 following the emergence of allegations made by Janel Grant.
Emanuel’s account offers new details about the discussions between the TKO executives and McMahon as the company dealt with the fallout from the allegations.

According to Emanuel’s memoir, he was contacted by Mark Shapiro shortly after new allegations against McMahon were reported by The Wall Street Journal in January 2024. Shapiro, TKO’s president and COO at the time, told Emanuel that McMahon needed to leave the company entirely.

Emanuel recalled Shapiro telling him that there could be “no emeritus position, no involvement in the company whatsoever.” Shapiro then called McMahon directly.
During the call, Vince McMahon reportedly acknowledged that he understood what needed to happen. Emanuel wrote that McMahon said he had “clarity” but was uncomfortable with the situation before agreeing to follow their direction.
“Shapiro dials; Vince answers right away. I know what needs to be done, I have clarity, but I’m feeling uncomfortable. So I deploy my go-to phrase— Tell him, Mark. Shapiro sighs. Vince, we’ve crossed several red lines and we’re in new territory here. We both wait, listening to the white noise. Finally, Vince says— Okay. Tell me what to do and I’ll do it. The conversation ultimately led to McMahon resigning as TKO executive chairman and leaving the company’s board. His departure brought an end to his formal involvement with WWE and TKO.
