Virginia wineries hit by spring frosts eligible for grape loss waivers

(WFXR) - Virginia wineries and vineyards that lost out on usual grape harvests due to frosts this spring are getting some state-sponsored relief.
A warm early spring kickstarted agricultural growth, but biting frosts and freezes during March and April raised fears for reduced harvests later in the year.
Many wineries and vineyards were impacted by the cold weather, according to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS).
In response, VDACS submitted a joint exemption request on behalf of grape producers to the Virginia Alcoholic Beverage Control Authority (ABC), which granted automatic waivers to 169 wineries and vineyards.

"The severe damage caused by frost and freeze this spring is an example of when it's important for state leadership to come together to support our producers in meaningful, collaborative ways," said Charles Green, VDACS commissioner. "Governor Abigail Spanberger and Secretary of Agriculture and Forestry Katie Frazier understood the serious implications of what Virginia's wine industry was facing and worked to develop concrete relief with the assistance of Virginia ABC."
Virginia's wineries and vineyards typically use a limited amount of grapes from outside the Commonwealth under state law. This waiver allows them to source more grapes from out-of-state vineyards they don't already own or lease to make up for this year's losses.
"The spring frost and freeze caused significant crop losses for vineyards across Virginia, creating challenges that extend well beyond this year's harvest," said Jennifer Breaux, president of the Virginia Wineries Association. "This waiver provides affected farm wineries with critical flexibility to maintain production and protect their business while our vineyards recover."
Wine grape producers who may be eligible for a fruit loss exemption but haven't yet applied for a waiver can find steps through this link.
ABC will contact wineries and vineyards receiving VDACS waivers with guidance.
