Xander Schauffele drops grim reality check as US suffers historic Presidents Cup sweep

Xander Schauffele believes he wouldn't live to see a sample size large enough to say that the Americans aren’t good at foursome play.
The United States team is a combined 6-24-0 in foursomes matches over the last two Presidents Cups and Ryder Cups after being swetp Friday at Medinah Country Club.
The Presidents Cup was most recently played at Royal Montreal in September 2024 with the United States Team claiming its 10th straight victory and improving to 13-1-1 all-time, but even then they struggled in the foursomes format. A rough day on the course Tuesday gave the International Team a 7-3 lead with three sessions to play.

Asked why the Americans struggle with the format, 10-time PGA Tour winner Schauffele said he’ll never know.
“It's such a small sample,” said Schauffele. “Give me 200 looks and let me know what my record is after that. I'm going to die before that happens, so unfortunately, we're not going to get that look.”
Every American squad struggled, as they allowed the International team to sweep a session for the first time since the 2024 foursomes. The four-point advantage matches the largest lead the International team has held after two sessions, equaling their margin from 1998, which is also the only Presidents Cup the Americans have ever lost.

“You do feel, whether you put pressure on yourself to make something happen or a couple weird things happen on the course, you've only got 12 holes to regroup and try to get something done,” said Schauffele. “There's something to be said about getting off to a good start and being in sync early and then kind of riding the wave through.
“There's also something pretty satisfying from clawing your way back in and coming from behind and getting it done that way too. So current -- call it tough stretch, but not too worried, to be completely honest.”
He’s not the only one who isn’t stressed, as U.S. captain Brandt Snedeker said there's still plenty of golf to be played over the next two days.

“We obviously had a great day,” said Snedeker. “Didn't expect that to happen, but I guess we've got experience from 2024 having a Friday like that.
“Like I said, we've got to celebrate a good day but reset because, as Brandt answered it perfectly, this is a long tournament, and we're only a little bit of the way through it. Tomorrow is a big day; there's 8 points, and then there's still 20 points to go.
“It's obviously enjoyable to have a day like that on the golf course, but we reset tomorrow and start again.”
